Superstitions from around the world about moggies

Do you have any to add to the list?

England – Crossing the same path as a black cat is bad luck.   Mmmmmm what about Oscar’s recent bad luck LOL 😦

oscar

America – Dreaming of a white cat brings good luck.  Archie love you 🙂

France – If a maiden steps on a cat’s tail, it will take her a year longer to find a husband

China – A light haired cat will bring its owner silver, a dark haired cat will bring its owner gold.  I wonder if China has many black cats!

Germany – If a sick man sees two cats fighting, death is near.

Holland – If a cat washes behind its ears, you can expect visitors

Italy – A cat sneezing is a good omen for everyone who hears it

Russia – To ensure happiness in your new home, a cat must move in with you

Scotland – A strange black cat on your porch brings prosperity

Wales – Those who feed cats will have sun on their wedding day

North Africa – An ear of corn is hung behind the door for good fortune – a cat nibbling it will bring extra luck

BELIEF SAILORS HAVE ABOUT CATS

If  a cat licked its fur the wrong way, hail was on its way

When a cat sneezed you could be sure it was about to rain – and it would come from the direction in which the cat’s nose was pointing when it sneezed

A hefty gale was coming if the ship’s cat was seen frisking on deck

Cats were said to be able to raise storms with their tails, so a cat without a tail was seen as a guarantee of safe sailing weather.  Manx cats were considered luckiest of all to have aboard.   Sailor’s wives were sure to keep their cats well fed and happy, to avoid gale-inducing tail-wagging.

PLANNING A BBQ ? thought to remember

If a cat washed her face 0’er the ear, ‘Tis a sign that the weather will be clear.

  1. Of course a happy home is one with a cat… or two or more!

  2. Very interesting Michelle. America needs to adopt the Scottish belief about strange black cats on the porch bringing prosperity as they are the last to be adopted here in the states. We don’t understand that ’cause our humans love black kitties, as we know you do. Have a great week. 3. I don’t think us Aussies have any cat specific beliefs..apart from the stupid black cat rubbish…personally black cats rock 😉 great post hugs Fozziemum xxx

  4. We are having steak cooked on the BBQ tonight, Alf better get licking BOL xxoxxx

    Mollie and Alfie

  5. My personal belief: Every cat brings luck, especially when they cross the street 🙂 Pawkiss 🙂

  6. For the English back cat one I was told that if it passes behind you or in front will dictate whether it’s good or bad luck that you will get. However I can never remember which one is which! :0S

  7. Gosh……I don’t have anything to add to this list…..but I have always thought the “black cat” stigma is one of the saddest – sleek black panther cats are so gorgeous and just as dear and sweet as all the rest of us are!! Your guys are PROOF of that!! 😉

    Hugs, Sammy

  8. I hope I dream of a white cat! Yay. I have my own personal superstition – If a cat hides under a car and watches me, it’s trying to kill me. I’m afraid,

    Love and licks,

Luv Hannah and Lucy xx xx

  13. I think that’s the right punishment for the french girls, it’s mean to step on the tail of a kitty :o)

  14. New York State: if you butter a cat’s paws it won’t stray. I hven’t tried it but it sounds delicioius.
In regards to the black cat crossing your path, it was BAD LUCK if it crossed in FRONT of you, GOOD if it crossed BEHIND you.
Unknown origin: A calico cat at a wedding represented fertility for the married couple.
