Fur friend of January 2014 – Speedy

When Oscar & Archie last went to the vets (Over a week now) they met George a giant rabbit who was suffering with his teeth.  We do not know much about rabbits so thought lets interview our old friend Speedy and see if he can educate us 🙂

How did Speedy get his name?

When we picked Speedy or rather Speedy picked us were discussing it in the car,we hadn’t seen him run yet and his dad said he looks speedy and streamlined and we laughed we knew he would be fast on his feet so it stuck Speedy it was only when the warmer weather came and he was able to go out in the garden that he lived up to his name.

Speedy how did you come to your Forever Home?

Mummy and Daddy had just lost their previous Bunny a black and white Dutch called Thumper to the Rainbow Bridge,Mummy started looking for Rex bunnies as they had already said if they had another bunny that’s what they wanted.She found 2 adds for Rex bunnies one was a local breed she found on line and another was a man with an add in a local pet shop so she rang both and arranged to go and see them.Mummy said that Daddy hadn’t wanted to as it was only 3 days after Thumper had gone and he was to upset…she told me daddy kept crying and she couldn’t stand him crying all over the place and deal with her own grief so she put her foot down…hehehe…her words not mine…and bullied daddy into taking a look at the bunnies.They went to the breeder first and Daddy liked them but was uming and arring over them so she said to wait and to go and see the other place as she new there was a white one and she knew we had been rescued at auction were us bunnies would have gone to reptile breeders for food.and that’s where they saw me and to other bunnies one a spotted white normal bunny and the other a copper coloured Rex,Daddy fell for me as I was so brave ..hehehe.. and nosey and cuddled me then gave me to mummy for a cuddle.he still wasn’t sure so they put me back in the hutch and left..well I looked out thinking don’t leave me but they did,which made me sad but then they come back after 5 mins with a blue box carrier and the rest is history.Daddy said he liked the idea the Neal the man who had me had saved me from a horrible fate.

Benny from Two French Bulldogs,he was named a Tiny Super Hero because of he inspirational fight against liver cancer,Though he sadly didn’t make it and crossed the Rainbow bridge leaving his sister Lily behind.He was so brave and never let his illness get him down.

Tell us some thing new about Rabbits you have not shared before?

Mummy Said that Bunnies can be socialised with other types of pets her first bunny lived with two cats and a dog and used to play with them and sleep in front of the fire in a big group,she said you have to supervised the socialising but once they all learn to get along it is fun to watch them interact.

Any advice on anyone thinking about getting a rabbit?

Do your Research Us Bunnies are not an easy pet to take care of we need quality hay,a complete pellet food,and fresh greens and fresh herbs like parsley,but not carrots or fruit except as a treat as they have to much sugar and make us fat,not lettus as it will make our droppings or soft and runny and lots of fresh water.you need to do lots of research to get our diet right.we need to be wormed with rabbit wormer up to 4 times a year to stop us getting parasites like worms and E.Cuniculi and the like and if you live in an area where there are lots of wild rabbits and other pet rabbits you need to get us vaccinated against VHD and Myxomatosis.If we stop eating and pooping you need to take us to the vet straight away or we could die,we hide pain and illness because we are prey animals and only show that we are unwell when we are very ill which is why you have to take us to the vet straight away when we stop eating and pooping and You need a good vet who specialises in rabbits and small animals to get us the right treatment.We need to have our living quarters cleaned every day and we need a space large enough for us to run around and play and jump each day minimum 10ft x 10ft.and we scare very easily,we can be scared to death by foxes and cats and fireworks if kept out side.we are very social animals and need our humans or another bunny to interact with,And most of all if you are prepared to bunny proof an area in your house we make the most amazing House pets as we love to play and cuddle,we are very cheeky and funny and have the most complex characters you will never have a dull moment with us living in your house!
